One of the best-kept secrets in American wine is the Riesling from New York.
Judges at the 26th annual San Diego International Wine Competition drove home that point over the March 21-22 weekend with a clear preference for the 2007 Dr. Konstantin Frank Semi-Dry Riesling ($15) from New York's Finger Lakes region as Best of Show white wine at the 2009 SDIWC.
Another New York wine also took one of the big prizes when Wolffer Estate's 2007 Late Harvest Chardonnay ($37), an ice wine from Long Island's Hamptons district, was voted Best of Show in the dessert wine category.
Eberle Winery's 2007 Barbera ($22) from Paso Robles took the vote for Best of Show red wine; Yellowglen's non-vintage "Pink" won Best of Show sparkling at $12; and Eagle Castle's 2008 Syrah Rose ($14) was voted Best of Show rose to give Paso Robles another top award.
